About the 2026 updates
Ðǿմ«ý is introducing updates to the Te Hiranga Te Reo Rangatira digital examination for the 2026 end-of-year examinations.
These updates include the introduction of audio-recording functionality, enabling ākonga to record their spoken responses directly within the digital assessment platform.
The changes are designed to support a more streamlined assessment process, from ākonga completing their assessment through to their responses being available for marking.
Information and guidance about the updates, including what they mean for ākonga, kaiako, Principal's Nominees and Examination Centre Managers, will be provided ahead of the examinations.
Online webinars will also be held on 13 October and 15 October at 3.30 pm to outline the changes and explain what these will mean for the administration and management of the examination.
Supporting resources, guidance and instructions will be available on this page as they are released.

Using the audio-recording tool
An instructional video is available to help ākonga prepare for the 2026 Te Hiranga Te Reo Rangatira examination and understand what to expect when completing the digital assessment.
The video demonstrates how the new inbuilt audio-recording functionality in Assessment Master works, including how ākonga will access the recording tool and record their spoken responses during the examination.
Ākonga are encouraged to watch the video before the examination so they are familiar with the process and feel prepared to use the audio-recording functionality on the day.

Kia ora, this video is for those whose exam has an oral component where they will need to record themselves during the exam.
First thing is that you need to log into Assessment Master which we will do here.
The first page that you will come across asks to check that you are using chrome as your browser, we are, we’re moving on.
The second page is general exam instructions, so we will move past that too.
And now we must click yes, allow using the microphone on your computer, so we’re going to click yes to that. Now once we’ve done that, we can listen to make sure that we can hear what the exam is saying to us via our headphones, but here we’re really interested in making sure that we can be heard.
So I’m going to click yes to record and it’s now going to record my voice. I do that for a few seconds, I can say whatever I like and then once I’ve got a few seconds of me talking, I play it back to myself to check that it’s coming through nice and clearly.
If it is coming through clearly, I’m all good, if its not I can bin that and then click record again. Here you should be good to go.
