The New Zealand Qualifications Authority (Ðǿմ«Ã½) has today released Aromatawai and the Principles of Assessment, a publication designed to support schools and tertiary providers in developing quality assessment and aromatawai practices.
The publication also aims to strengthen a sector wide understanding of aromatawai, a teaching, learning and assessment approach underpinned by mtauranga Mori.
“High quality assessment supports qualifications which are credible, reliable and valuable for students, employers and communities, whether here in Aotearoa New Zealand or overseas,â€ says Ðǿմ«Ã½ Deputy Chief Executive Assessment, Andrea Gray.
Aromatawai and the Principles of Assessment aligns the kaupapa at the heart of Te Hono o Te Kahurangi – a framework used by Ðǿմ«Ã½ to carry out the quality assurance of mÄtauranga MÄori – with five principles for assessment:
- Valid | Pono
- Reliable | Haepapa
- Informative | Mrama
- Equitable | Tika
- Authentic | Tūturu
“Schools and tertiary providers are encouraged to consider these principles, and the overarching kaupapa, when designing assessment, Ms Gray says.
Over the coming months Ðǿմ«Ã½ will develop guidance and resources to help support assessors.
